Georgia Power Wins Award for Restoring Power to Puerto Rico

Georgia Power Co., a subsidiary of PowerWright’s client, Southern Company, is being recognized by a national association of investor-owned electric companies for its contributions to power restoration efforts in Puerto Rico last year following Hurricane Maria.

The Atlanta-based utility is receiving the Edison Electric Institute’s (EEI) Emergency Assistance Award for its help after the devastating Category 4 hurricane made landfall in Puerto Rico last September, leaving all of the island’s residents without power and damaging at least 80 percent of Puerto Rico’s energy grid.

Georgia Power was among the mainland U.S. utilities that provided mutual assistance to the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA).

Top 10 LinkedIn Do’s and Don’ts for Engineers

Social media has become an everyday part of our lives. Many people wake up and check their social network notifications before checking email or even brushing their teeth. The question we face now is how can we use social media to complement our professional relationships, instead of simply using them to catch up with friends.

We’ve created the ultimate list of do’s and don’ts for every Engineer.

1. Do – Update your LinkedIn profile regularly.

You should check your LinkedIn page at least weekly to say connected to other industry professionals, stay on top of the latest news, and to check for new connection requests.

2. Don’t – Don’t use a casual picture for your LinkedIn profile image.

Remember LinkedIn, unlike the other social networks is there for professional use. Of course you can use to be social, but you want to make sure your first impression (your profile image) presents the same image you would want to present at a job interview or networking function.

3. Do – Send cold invitations.

Unlike cold emails or cold calls, it is 100% okay to send cold invitations to people you want to connect with on LinkedIn. Here’s our top tip: Instead of using the standard “I would like to add you to my professional network” try something like this:

“Hi _______, I read this article on you (or your company) and found it so intriguing how you (or your company) ________(what the article described in 5 words or less). It would be great to add you to my professional network.

All the best,

Your Name

Title”

4. Don’t – Get too personal.

You never want to get too personal on LinkedIn. Remember it’s the professional network. Before you share an update or story think to yourself “If my boss saw this, would it be well received?”

5. Do – Join groups.

LinkedIn groups are the best way to find and connect with likeminded industry professionals. You should join at least 3 groups and engage regularly. Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself, comment and submit your own content. These are the 3 ways to standout in LinkedIn groups.

6. Don’t –  Join too many groups.

There is such a thing as overdoing it. Joining too many groups pretty much guarantees that you won’t be engaged in any of them. Remember the rule of 3. Join at least 1 industry specific group, at least 1 regional based group, and at least 1 hobby related group. This way you can connect with other industry professionals that are nearby and share similar interests, which also makes for a great icebreaker.

7. Do – Share content.

We’re not suggesting you start an Engineering blog. We do suggest you stay active. If you find some really cool articles about your industry don’t be shy, share them. If you found it interesting, chances are someone in your network will too. We suggest sharing at least weekly. This is a sure way to become an influencer. Don’t know where to start? You can always share some of our latest blogs. We don’t mind.

8. Don’t – Accept any and all connection requests.

We like quality over quantity. Your connections should be in line with your professional goals. If you have thousands of irrelevant connections, that means you will more than likely see tons of irrelevant content in your news feed. You have a limited amount of time. It’s best to make it count. You can do this by combing through your connection requests and only accepting ones that are mission and vision aligned with your professional goals. Check the company, title and work experience of the person before simply hitting the accept button.

9. Do – Connect to Company’s page

Most companies have a LinkedIn company page. It’s a great way to connect with colleagues and learn about what’s going on in your company. You can share your company’s updates on your page, add comments and help spread the word about the latest and greatest happenings.

10. Don’t – Leave negative feedback.

This is a huge mistake. Employers and colleagues are always looking. Did you use to work at company X and your boss was any but pleasant? The last place you want to vent about it is on LinkedIn. It will reflect negatively on you and can also make your current look bad. When it comes to leaving negative feedback, even if you’re in a group and someone requests it, play it safe and don’t do it.

Come up with 2-3 articles and send them to your favorite industry blogs. Once approved, you can showcase your article which automatically builds credibility and influence.

3. Submit to Speak at an industry Event

Every year there are hundreds of industry specific conferences. Each of these conferences have a Call for Speakers. Look up the conferences you attend regularly or would like to attend and submit your speaker paper. To ensure your selection follow these 3 tips 1) Have an intriguing seminar title 2) Be original and thought provoking about what your session will cover 3) Try to submit as soon as possible. The early bird gets the worm when it comes to speaker selection. It’s much easier to stand out when there are fewer submissions.

4. Volunteer/Become a Mentor

There’s no better feeling than giving back to your community. By becoming a mentor or teaching a STEM class at your local high school or nonprofit organization you can give back and also build your expert profile.

5. Take or Create a Course

Expand your skill set but signing up for a course on Coursera. Staying on top of trends in your industry will make you invaluable. Sign up for class, and share what you’ve learned. You can even take it a step further and become the teacher. There is no surer way to showcase your expertise than by teaching others how to do something.

We’ve all heard that thinking like an Entrepreneur is best, but we’d argue that thinking like an Engineer is what will really take you to new heights. Here are 5 ways to think like an Engineer and become a problem solver in your career and everyday life.

1.Keep things simple

The first step to thinking like an Engineer is to keep things simple. The best design is the simplest design. Getting to the root of the problem is key. The more difficult is it to use, the more easily it will break. So before you attempt to make things complicated, think about the simplest way to create the best solution. The same principle applies to life and business. Be sure you not making things more complicated than they need to be. When troubleshooting, always think what’s the best way to solve this problem. Then, once you understand the best way to solve it, think about the simplest way to make that happen.

2. Be resourceful

Engineers understand that to every problem there is a solution. Some require creating a solution, others just require a new perspective to what is actually needed to reach the point of success. Either way it is understood you are never out of resources, just out of resourcefulness. To overcome this easily overlooked obstacle, how about testing out a new way of thinking. It’s easy to feel stuck, but Engineers are constantly thinking outside the box. They say the best ideas are born from trying to solve a problem we couldn’t agree more.

3. Calculate the risk

This quote is one that many Entrepreneurs live by. Engineers see it differently. You can still have a great reward with calculated risks. We take in all the information, analyze all the data, anticipate cost, time, materials needed, and so on; before making big decisions. Understanding what is at stake, doesn’t minimize the reward. In fact, we’d argue understanding what is at stake makes the reward that much greater.

4. Reverse-Engineer

Becoming an Engineer boils down to one thing – Curiosity. We are curious about how stuff works. It can be illustrated in the early stages by the desire to break things apart, only to put it back together. Some may see it as nerdy. This is a term nearly every Engineer has heard at least one time in their life, but we see it as brilliance. Curiosity is the one thing that never goes out of style. The need for understanding is a strong tool that more people should embrace. Get to the solution by understanding where the problem was first created. You will always see a trend, the problem didn’t just arise. It was a slow series of events. Reverse Engineer or work backwards to see where the problem began. This helps guarantee that your new design doesn’t have the same issue(s) as the initial design.

5. Never Be Afraid To Ask Questions

Engineering is all about asking questions to best understand the desired outcome. It takes the guesswork out of the equation. Too often, people are afraid to ask the necessary questions, or even worse don’t know what questions to ask. Questions are another tool in the engineering tool belt. Asking questions now leads to fewer assumptions later. Fewer assumptions later, lead to better results. Better results lead to fewer reoccurring issues later. Fewer reoccurring issues later lead to peace of mind.
